Moray is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in the Sacred Valley. It features a series of concentric circular terraces built into a natural depression in the earth. These terraces are believed to have been an agricultural research center where the Incas experimented with crop cultivation at different altitudes and microclimates. Each level creates a distinct temperature zone, allowing the Incas to simulate growing conditions from various regions. Moray showcases the advanced agricultural knowledge and innovation of Inca civilization.
Maras Salt Mines, or Salineras de Maras, are a stunning network of over 3,000 salt pools carved into the mountainside. These ancient pools have been used since pre-Inca times to extract salt through evaporation. Fed by a subterranean saltwater stream, each pool produces pure pink salt, harvested by local families using traditional methods. The bright white salt flats contrasted against the red mountains create a truly breathtaking landscape, making Maras one of the most visually striking and culturally rich sites in the Sacred Valley.
